[La Ronge, SK – March 11, 2024]- Northlands College is proud to announce the inauguration of its new Coffee Shop at the Canoe Campus in La Ronge, Saskatchewan. This exciting addition marks a significant milestone in the institution’s commitment to providing enhanced learning opportunities for its learners.
More than just a place to grab a cup of coffee, the Coffee Shop named “Canoe Café” by the learners themselves, represents a pioneering venture into work-integrated learning at Northlands College. Positioned within the very campus where learners come to grow and flourish, this establishment serves as a dynamic laboratory for students to develop and refine a wide array of essential skills.
The Canoe Café is a unique learning opportunity for adult learners who want to complete their education and gain practical workplace skills. Jocelyn Vandall, Director of Flexible Learning, explains: “By running the Canoe Café, learners face real-world challenges and rewards. They also acquire skills and knowledge that can help them earn credits for Adult 10 and 12 courses. The Canoe Café is a place where learning and working go hand in hand.”
Jim Lemaigre, MLA Athabasca commended this initative, saying, “Congratulations to Northlands College for creating this innovative space that is culturally safe, respectful and empowering. The Canoe Café is a great way to support students during their post-secondary journey and fits with the empowering learning environment the College has built for Indigenous students and learners. I hope that this space, and the work Northlands College has done to create it, will contribute to further building a stronger campus community.”
Moreover, the Canoe Café serves as a platform for nurturing confidence and decision-making abilities in learners. By navigating real-world challenges and opportunities, learners gain invaluable insights into the complexities of business management and the nuances of professional conduct. This hands-on approach not only enhances their academic knowledge but also equips them with the practical skills and business acumen needed to thrive in today’s competitive job market.
Karsten Henriksen, President & CEO of Northlands College, provided his comments on this initiative, stating, “The inauguration of the Coffee Shop emphasizes our unwavering commitment to empowering learners and fostering holistic development within our community. By providing a platform for learners to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting, we are not only preparing them for successful careers but also instilling in them the confidence and resilience needed to overcome challenges and seize opportunities.”
Northlands College extends a warm invitation to the community and the press to visit the Coffee Shop. As we unveil this dynamic space, we invite you to witness experiential learning in action. The college will continue to provide such platforms where theory meets practice, and learners emerge not only as knowledgeable professionals but as confident, capable leaders ready to make their mark on the world.
