George Laban (La Ronge)

George Laban (La Ronge)

George started the ABE program at Northlands College in the Fall of 2022 and graduated in the Spring of 2023. His experience during the program was a positive one, but there were difficulties that he had to overcome while attending. Coming out of the workforce and going to school was a huge adjustment in his life. The encouragement that he received from the faculty at Northlands College and his family inspired him to build a better future and gave him the strength he needed when he felt like giving up. George found a part-time job while he was in school and continued with his studies and graduated as the ABE Valedictorian. George is now attending Saskatchewan Polytechnic where he is enrolled in the Industrial Mechanics program. After he completes his program, he hopes to find work in the mining, oil/gas, and manufacturing sectors. If George gave up while attending Northlands College, he would not have the opportunities that he does now. The ABE program gave him the boost he needed to carry on!

Ruby Halkett (La Ronge)

Ruby Halkett (La Ronge)

Presently, she is working casually at the Long-Term Care at the Mamawetan Churchill River Health Centre as a Recreational Worker. Ruby is continuing her educational journey with Northlands College by attending Mental Health and Wellness. There were times when Ruby wanted to give up, but she remembered that her family was depending on her to accomplish her dreams. Ruby wants to be in the healthcare field so she can make the world a better place for people who are hurting and in pain.  Ruby is dedicated to her education, and she is on track to complete Mental Health and Wellness and graduate again from Northlands College is 2025.

Jayson Tremblay (La Ronge)

Jayson Tremblay (La Ronge)

Jayson came to Northlands College in the winter of 2022 because he felt he needed to finish his education. He put it off for ten years, which he felt was far too long. He had been out of school since 2012 when he dropped out of high school to work full-time as a cook. Some of the challenges he has had to overcome as an ABE learner are laziness and balance. Jayson tends to overthink and worry, which keeps him up at night. Now Jayson often focuses on how ABE can help overcome his struggles. Jayson likes how the instructors are flexible and willing to work with the learners at their own pace. The instructors are there to support the learners when they have questions. Jayson also enjoys the campus environment because it creates healthy comradery between learners and the faculty; he feels like he belongs to a community.

The ABE program helps Jayson plan for his future in the workforce. Jayson hopes his efforts to educate himself will help him create balance in his life. He appreciates the flexible learning structure of the program, which allows him to overcome barriers he faces from time to time. Upon graduating from the ABE program, Jayson plans to pursue a teaching career after taking the Bachelor of Education program. Jayson wants to become a supportive teacher who can give learners a fulfilling experience like the ABE program provided him with. Throughout his experience in the ABE program, he found it easier to reach out for help because of the flexible learning environment and community experience where learners and faculty support each other. He feels the ABE program is a significant first step in achieving his dream of completing the Bachelor of Education program by 2028.
